MANTU
afghan mantu- a beef and onion steamed dumpling
Equipment
- steamer 2 tier steamer pots work best
- food processor optional
Ingredients
- 1 wonton skins/wrappers 1 package
FOR FILLING
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp garlic minced
- salt to taste
- 2 onions pulsed/finely chopped
- 1-2 tbsp ground coriander
- ½ tsp black pepper
FOR ASSEMBLING
- small bowl of water
- small bowl of oil with brush
Instructions
FILLING
- sauté ground beef with garlic and salt until all liquid has evaporated and meat has browned. If the meat is not finely mincing in pan, transfer to a food processor and pulse 2-3 times
- finely chop onions or pulse in the processor
- combine cooked ground beef with onions
- add ground coriander and black pepper. Mix and set aside
ASSMEBLE DUMPLINGS
- bring water to boil in steam pot
- spray the steamer tiers with oil or brush with oil
- wet the 4 corners of wonton skins
- place ground beef filling in center
- fold wonton to desired shape
- lay in oil brushed steamer pot as you fill
- once they're all filled, you are ready to steam in the steamer for a minimum 15 minutes until dumplings start appearing translucent
PLATING
- layer plain yogurt on the bottom of your serving dish, top with cooked mantu, add your favorite sauce (lentil sauce, simple tomato sauce, plain yogurt drizzle, meat sauce, etc)
Notes
This recipe is for the mantu filling. The topping for this dish varies by preference. You could make a simple sauce, a lentil sauce, plain yogurt drizzle, a meat sauce, etc. How I made the meat sauce seen here can be found on my Instagram @maryamzekria
